Mike's Maes Y Pant Everest Challenge
One of our regular visitors has done some sums and worked out how many times you would need to climb the steps to the viewpoint in Maes y Pant to have reached the equivalent of Mount Everest! If anyone would like to follow in his footsteps, here is what Mike says about his ‘Everest Challenge’:
'The idea came to me towards the end of 2022 when following persistent and annoying calf injuries, I decided to hang up my running shoes and stop trying to pretend I was still young enough to run Half Marathons! Seeking another means of maintaining some level of fitness,
I hit upon the idea of using the steps in the quarry. I calculated the vertical rise in the flight of steps and then calculated how many times I would need to do them in order to climb the equivalent height to Mount Everest. I designed a progress sheet to record my efforts.
Each square represents one ascent of the steps. For the record, the vertical height of the steps is 16m and the total number of flights required to achieve the goal is 553.
I started my first attempt on Jan 1st 2023 and reached the summit on April 2nd 2023.
This represented an average of 6 flights per day.’

Please remember that a challenge like this is not suitable for everyone.
